Rated 4 out of 5 by JAMES from Add another adapter to connect to new Mac laptops I bought the Apple Thunderbolt (TB) to Firewire (FW) Adapter to connect my Firewire devices to a 2017MacBook Pro (MBP). However, the product description for the TB to FW adapter fails to specify that the adapter connects ONLY TB2 to FW800. TB2 and TB3 connectors are different sizes as are FW400 and FW800. You will need additional adapters to connect devices other than TB2 to FW800. For example, my 2017 MBP has only Thunderbolt (TB) 3 ports, no inbuilt TB2 or FW ports. Therefore, I had to also buy an Apple Thunderbolt 3 Male to Thunderbolt 2 Female Adapter before I could connect my MBP to this TB to FW adapter. Although the two adapter/cable combination looks kludged, it works fine.
Previously it was common for computers or cards to have Firewire 400 ports, which are featured on. Focusrite Help Centre. A cable will not generally have any chipset inside of it and provide the most direct connection. Please note that if you are using a Mac or PC with a Thunderbolt port you will be required to use a. Rated 1 out of 5 by Gary from This will not work with Apple's new Thunderbolt connection I ordered this cable to use my firewire connected RAID hard drive to my new, top of the line, 27' iMac (2017) which does not have a firewire connection (Thanks, Apple). It has Thunderbolt instead. So I buy the adapter and find that my iMac has Thunderbolt 3 and this adapter is for Thunderbolt 2. Note, there is no indication in the description of the adapter that indicates that it is for only Thunderbolt 2. You can see the lighting bolt symbol in the picture and that is the same exact symbol that is on the back of my iMac. Well, there's $29 down the drain. Apple should not name a completely different connection the same as an old connection.
Luckily my hard drive also has eSATA, so I have ordered a Thunderbolt 3 to eSATA cable. Let's hope that works. New RAID drives are very expensive.

Before I encounter this device my workflow slated for about one and half hours trying to figure out why the deck was not being seen by the computer. Noticed this device hanging off the back of the computer, but really did not know what it was. I asked the tech who stated its a 'THUNDERBOLT'. What the hell is that!
Make a long story short and after attending the similar by the marketing rep from Thunderbolt, well let me say this, Thank God for Thunderbolt!!!!!!!!! No more down time, connect and play.or lets go to work.
I am using the adapter to connect the mini-dv deck to my iMac computer for converting mini-dv to digital content for editing.absolutely, amazing.
